Ready For Back-To-School?

After nearly two months off from school, it is no wonder that children may be feeling a little uneasy about beginning a new school year. It is important to remind your child that these feelings are completely normal, and with time they will fall back into a routine. Remind your child of the positive aspects of beginning a new school year; making new friends and memories may help to put children at ease.

An important thing to think about is backpack safety. Often parents and children do not understand the magnitude of backpacks and the harmful effects they may bring upon a child’s back. Heavy backpacks frequently lead to severe back problems and unnecessary back pain. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, it is important to make sure your child’s backpack weighs no more than 5 to 10 percent of their body weight; heavier backpacks will cause a child to bend forward in an attempt to support the weight on his or her back. Wearing a backpack properly can also help to prevent back problems; make sure your child’s backpack does not hang lower than 4 inches below the waistline and urge your child to wear both straps when holding their backpack.

It is particularly important to go over bullying and its repercussions with your child. Be sure to explain to your child how prevalent bullying has become and why it is important to never be a bully, or if they are being bullied, to ask for help from a trusted adult. Make it clear to your child that bullying comes in many forms and can be very hurtful. Encourage your child to always treat others with the respect they deserve and to help put an end to bullying.
